In person in Cardiff, and online

A space to understand what’s going on underneath

Maybe you’ve been carrying something for a while now. Low mood that won’t lift. Worry that runs in the background of every day. Grief, stress at work, or a pattern in your relationships that keeps repeating and you can’t quite explain. Individual therapy at Cynefin Therapy gives you a regular, private hour each week, in person in Cardiff or online, to slow down and look at it properly, with someone trained to listen. Sessions are open-ended, so there’s no set number to commit to, and you don’t need a diagnosis or a crisis to come. It isn’t about quick fixes. It’s about understanding the deeper emotional and relational patterns underneath what you’re feeling, so that things can start to shift over time. Sessions are £30, and you begin with a short online assessment for £25.

Who will you be working with?

Your sessions are with a trainee therapist, at £30 a session.

Every therapist working with us is in the final stages of a recognised training course, has been assessed and approved by Cynefin Therapy, is a registered student member of a professional body, and receives regular clinical supervision. That’s what allows us to offer counselling in Cardiff at £30 a session, considerably less than most private therapy. The sessions themselves are offered in exactly the same way as full-fee counselling: a private room or a private video call, a regular weekly slot, and a therapist who is there for you and nobody else for that hour.

Questions people often ask

Individual therapy, answered

Click Get in touch at the top of this page, or use our contact page. We’ll send you a couple of online forms to complete, then book you an online initial assessment (£25). After that you’re matched with a therapist based on your availability and preferences, and they’ll contact you to arrange your first weekly session.

Either. Most people see their therapist in person at our Cardiff practice on Wellington Street, and we also offer individual therapy online by video for anyone who prefers it or can’t easily get to Cardiff. Tell us which you’d prefer when you enquire.

As long as you need it to. Our therapy is open-ended, with no minimum or maximum number of sessions. Some people come for a few months, others for much longer. You and your therapist review how things are going as you go along, and you can finish whenever it feels right.

That’s more common than you might think, and it’s fine. You don’t need a clear problem or a neat way of describing it. Your therapist will help you find a way in. Often the thing that’s hardest to put into words is the thing most worth exploring.

After your first few sessions, your therapist will check in with you about how the therapy is feeling. If the fit isn’t right, we’ll do our best to find another therapist better suited to you. You can also contact the practice directly at any point if you’d rather talk to us about it.

£30 a session, paid weekly, after an initial online assessment of £25. There’s no joining fee and no fixed number of sessions to commit to. If you’re on a very low income, ask us about concessions when you enquire.

Yes. What you share stays between you and your therapist, within the usual professional limits, which your therapist will explain in your first session. Our therapists also bring their work to regular clinical supervision, which is a normal and confidential part of good practice.

It’s a short online conversation with Nina, our Clinical Assessor. She’ll hear what’s bringing you to therapy, answer any questions you have, and help us think about which therapist is right for you. It costs £25.

A Cardiff counselling practice set up to make good therapy affordable and accessible. Individual therapy is delivered in person at our practice at Wellington House on Wellington Street, and online, by approved trainee therapists supported by an experienced team and regular clinical supervision. We also offer psychosexual and relationship therapy, online.

FAQ

the frequently asked questions

Our sessions are in person or online depending on the service. Individual therapy is in person at our Cardiff practice on Wellington Street, and can also be offered online. Psychosexual therapy and relationship therapy are online.

You can book a session after you have submitted an enquiry, completed a couple of online forms and attended an online assessment with the practice manager. If you are having any problems booking a session, please email info@cynefintherapy.co.uk.

We provide open ended therapy, which means there is no minimum or maximum number of sessions available to you. Though most clients will have a minimum of 6 to 12 sessions, it is not unusual to continue beyond this point. Your counsellor will routinely review your progress together, working with you to decide when it’s time to end your counselling. We recommend you provide a minimum of two weeks’ notice to give you time to reflect on your therapy journey and to process the end of your relationship.

Finding the right counsellor is a very personal experience. After you have had your initial session, we will allocate you to a counsellor who matches your availability and preferences. If after the first session you believe the counsellor isn’t right for you, get in touch with our admin team who will be happy to support you.

We only offer counselling sessions on a weekly basis, at the same time each week. Weekly counselling maintains the consistency of sessions, which supports the progress of the therapy relationship.

If you are unable to attend your session, please contact your counsellor to make them aware. If you cancel within 48 hours of the booked session, the fee remains chargeable. This fee may be waived in exceptional circumstances, for example due to sudden hospitalisation.
