When something feels off sexually, it’s worth understanding why

Maybe sex has started to feel more like pressure than pleasure. Maybe desire has gone quiet, or something physical keeps getting in the way and you’ve been told there’s nothing wrong. Perhaps you and your partner have stopped talking about it altogether. Psychosexual therapy, sometimes called sex therapy, is a space to look at all of this openly and without judgement. A difficulty like this isn’t a sign of failure. More often it’s a signal that something in your emotional or relational world needs attention and care. You don’t need to be in a relationship to come, and you don’t need to have found the words for it yet. Sessions are online, by video, so you can talk from wherever you feel most comfortable. Sessions are £30.

Where and when

Online by video at the same time each week, with therapists across the UK, so you don’t need to be near Cardiff.

Who will you be working with?

Your sessions are with a trainee psychosexual therapist, at £30 a session.

Every therapist working with us is in the final stages of a recognised training course, has been assessed and approved by Cynefin Therapy, is a registered student member of a professional body, and receives regular clinical supervision. That’s how we’re able to offer psychosexual therapy at £30 a session, when private sex therapy usually costs a great deal more, without changing anything about the privacy or the care you receive. Sessions are weekly, at the same time each week, for as long as you need.

Questions people often ask

Psychosexual therapy, answered

Ours is individual work, so you come on your own, and you don’t need to be in a relationship to do it. If you’d like to explore a sexual or intimacy difficulty together with your partner, relationship therapy is the route to take, and psychosexual work forms part of that where those difficulties are being explored within the relationship.

Psychosexual therapy focuses particularly on sex, desire and intimacy, and you do that work on your own. Relationship therapy looks at the relationship as a whole, with both of you there, and psychosexual work forms part of it where those difficulties are being explored within the relationship. If you’re not sure which fits, tell us what’s going on and we’ll suggest a starting point.

Sexual difficulties are rarely only physical or only psychological, and the two tend to feed each other. If you haven’t already, it’s worth speaking to your GP to rule out a medical cause. Therapy can run alongside medical care, and speaking with a therapist may help with the emotional side, which is often where the difficulty lives.

Only as much as you choose. Your therapist will go at your pace and won’t push you into anything. Most people find it gets easier once they realise that nothing they say will shock or embarrass the person listening.

Yes. Everything you share stays between you and your therapist, within the usual professional limits, which your therapist will explain at the start. If you’d like to talk before booking, you can get in touch with any questions.

£30 a session, paid weekly, after an initial online assessment of £25. There’s no joining fee and no fixed number of sessions to commit to. If you’re on a very low income, ask us about concessions when you enquire.

Not at the moment. Our psychosexual therapy is online, because the therapists who deliver it are based across the UK. We’re a Cardiff practice and bringing psychosexual therapy to Cardiff in person is a longer-term aim, but for now the sessions are by video, which most people find works well for this kind of conversation.

It’s a short online conversation with Nina, our Clinical Assessor. She’ll hear what’s bringing you to therapy, answer any questions you have, and help us think about which therapist is right for you. It costs £25.

A Cardiff counselling practice set up to make good therapy affordable and accessible, including psychosexual therapy, which is often hard to find at a fee people can sustain. Our trainee psychosexual therapists work online across the UK, supported by an experienced team and regular clinical supervision. We also offer individual therapy in person in Cardiff and online.

FAQ

the frequently asked questions

Our sessions are in person or online depending on the service. Individual therapy is in person at our Cardiff practice on Wellington Street, and can also be offered online. Psychosexual therapy and relationship therapy are online.

You can book a session after you have submitted an enquiry, completed a couple of online forms and attended an online assessment with the practice manager. If you are having any problems booking a session, please email info@cynefintherapy.co.uk.

We provide open ended therapy, which means there is no minimum or maximum number of sessions available to you. Though most clients will have a minimum of 6 to 12 sessions, it is not unusual to continue beyond this point. Your counsellor will routinely review your progress together, working with you to decide when it’s time to end your counselling. We recommend you provide a minimum of two weeks’ notice to give you time to reflect on your therapy journey and to process the end of your relationship.

Finding the right counsellor is a very personal experience. After you have had your initial session, we will allocate you to a counsellor who matches your availability and preferences. If after the first session you believe the counsellor isn’t right for you, get in touch with our admin team who will be happy to support you.

We only offer counselling sessions on a weekly basis, at the same time each week. Weekly counselling maintains the consistency of sessions, which supports the progress of the therapy relationship.

If you are unable to attend your session, please contact your counsellor to make them aware. If you cancel within 48 hours of the booked session, the fee remains chargeable. This fee may be waived in exceptional circumstances, for example due to sudden hospitalisation.
