When the same argument keeps coming back

You care about each other, but lately every conversation seems to end in the same place. Or the arguments have stopped and been replaced by a quiet distance you can’t quite name. Maybe trust has been broken, life has changed shape, or you’ve simply drifted. Relationship therapy at Cynefin gives the two of you a calm, neutral space to slow things down and understand what’s really happening underneath, with a therapist who isn’t on anyone’s side. Our approach is psychosexually informed, which means intimacy and closeness are part of the conversation whenever they need to be. You can come together, or one of you can start alone and the other can join later, and you set the pace throughout. Sessions are online, by video, so you can join from home, or from two different places if that’s easier. Sessions are £40 for both of you.

Couples counselling you can afford to keep going with

Who will you be working with?

Your sessions are with a trainee relationship therapist, at £40 a session for both of you.

Every therapist working with us is in the final stages of a recognised training course, has been assessed and approved by Cynefin Therapy, is a registered student member of a professional body, and receives regular clinical supervision. That’s what allows us to offer relationship therapy at £40 a session for both of you, so the cost doesn’t become another thing to argue about, and you can keep going for as long as the work needs. Sessions are weekly, at the same time each week.

Questions people often ask

Relationship therapy, answered

Relationship therapy needs both partners to take part, so it isn’t something we can begin with one of you. If you’d like to start on your own, individual therapy is the right place, and if you later decide to move into relationship therapy we’d normally arrange a different therapist for that work. Once relationship therapy is underway, your therapist may occasionally agree to see one of you separately as part of the work, but both of you would normally attend the planned sessions.

Not at all. Many couples come well before things reach breaking point, because they’ve noticed a distance growing or the same disagreement returning. Coming early tends to make the work gentler.

No. Your therapist is there for the relationship, not for one of you. Both of you will be heard, and both of you will be gently challenged at times. If either of you ever feels the balance is off, say so, and it will be taken seriously.

Sometimes couples come to therapy and realise that separating is the right thing. If that happens, therapy can help you do it with more care and less damage, especially where children are involved. The aim is always a decision you’ve both understood, not a particular outcome.

Psychosexual therapy focuses particularly on sex, desire and intimacy, and it’s done individually. Relationship therapy looks at the relationship as a whole, and where sexual or intimacy difficulties are part of what’s happening between you, psychosexual work forms part of that. So if the difficulty sits between the two of you, this is the route to take.

£40 a session for both of you, paid weekly, after an initial online assessment of £25. There’s no joining fee and no fixed number of sessions to commit to. If you’re on a very low income, ask us about concessions when you enquire.

Not at the moment. Our relationship therapy is online, because the therapists who deliver it are based across the UK. Many couples find video sessions easier to fit around work and childcare, and being in your own space can make it easier to talk. If you’re looking for in-person sessions, our individual therapy is offered at our Cardiff practice.

It’s a short online conversation with Nina, our Clinical Assessor. She’ll hear what’s bringing you to therapy, answer any questions you have, and help us think about which therapist is right for you. It costs £25.

A Cardiff counselling practice set up to make good therapy affordable and accessible for individuals and couples. Our trainee relationship therapists work online across the UK, supported by an experienced team and regular clinical supervision. We also offer individual therapy in person in Cardiff and online.

FAQ

the frequently asked questions

Our sessions are in person or online depending on the service. Individual therapy is in person at our Cardiff practice on Wellington Street, and can also be offered online. Psychosexual therapy and relationship therapy are online.

You can book a session after you have submitted an enquiry, completed a couple of online forms and attended an online assessment with the practice manager. If you are having any problems booking a session, please email info@cynefintherapy.co.uk.

We provide open ended therapy, which means there is no minimum or maximum number of sessions available to you. Though most clients will have a minimum of 6 to 12 sessions, it is not unusual to continue beyond this point. Your counsellor will routinely review your progress together, working with you to decide when it’s time to end your counselling. We recommend you provide a minimum of two weeks’ notice to give you time to reflect on your therapy journey and to process the end of your relationship.

Finding the right counsellor is a very personal experience. After you have had your initial session, we will allocate you to a counsellor who matches your availability and preferences. If after the first session you believe the counsellor isn’t right for you, get in touch with our admin team who will be happy to support you.

We only offer counselling sessions on a weekly basis, at the same time each week. Weekly counselling maintains the consistency of sessions, which supports the progress of the therapy relationship.

If you are unable to attend your session, please contact your counsellor to make them aware. If you cancel within 48 hours of the booked session, the fee remains chargeable. This fee may be waived in exceptional circumstances, for example due to sudden hospitalisation.
