Affordable Therapy: Get the Help You Need on a Budget
“At Cynefin therapy, we understand the importance of having access to a safe, compassionate and non-judgemental space without the added worry of high costs.”
If you’re looking for a therapist and working on a budget, finding the right person can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re already struggling with your mental health and private therapy options are out of reach. However, looking after your mental and emotional wellbeing doesn’t have to break the bank.

In this article, we will explore some of the practical ways you can find more accessible and affordable therapy so you can get the support you want and deserve without the breaking the bank.
Low-Cost or Sliding Scale Therapists
Most therapists recognise the financial barriers people face when seeking counselling and some will offer ways to help you afford therapy. Two ways that therapists offer reduced rates are sliding scales and low-cost sessions.
Sliding Scales – These reduced rates are usually advertised and may be assessed based on income level or left for you to decide which rate works best for your budget. Either way, this can be a more affordable way to access therapy.
Low-Cost – These reduced rates are sometimes offered for specific client groups – those on welfare benefits, students, low income, or healthcare workers to name a few. Sometimes these rates are advertised, but not always. If you have found a therapist you would like to work with but can’t afford their fees, you can ask them when you enquire whether they offer a reduced rate.
You can often find therapists who offer these options by searching on online directories such as the BACP or Counselling Directory, and using the search filters to match your budget or to find those offering reduced rates to specific client groups.
Look at Charitable and Community Services
In most towns and cities around the UK, you will be able to find charity and community-based organisations who offer low-cost or free counselling services. Examples of these services include NHS referrals (see your GP), Mind, and some faith-based services. If you have very little to no disposable income and you’re prepared to wait for sessions, these can offer a valuable opportunity to start your therapy journey. Due to the demand for these services, its important to remember that these sessions can be time-limited and you may be waiting 3-12 months before you are allocated a therapist.
Work with a Trainee Therapist
Counselling and psychotherapy training institutions often run their own clinics where sessions are available at significantly reduced rates. Like Cynefin Therapy, the sessions are delivered by trainee therapists who are supported by experienced practitioners including their tutors, supervisors and the practice manager. Though they may have less clinical experience, trainee therapists have low client numbers, are enthusiastic and adhere to the same ethical and professional standards as qualified therapists. If you would like to read more about this, take a look at the BACP’s Ethical Framework.
Take Advantage of Online Therapy
Working with a therapist online will often cost less than working with a therapist in-person. This approach to therapy is notably different to sitting in the same room as a therapist, but just a effective and sometimes preferable due to the convenience. Due to lower operational costs, many therapists offer affordable online therapy from the comfort of your own home. Just remember to find a private and confidential space where you wont be overheard.
Practice Self-Care While Waiting for Therapy
If you are on a waiting list to begin counselling or your still exploring your options, self-help strategies can be a great interim step. By using exercises like mindfulness, journalling or by accessing free mental health apps, you can begin resourcing yourself and developing tools to manage your stress and difficult emotions.
